Home Physiotherapy Exercise Programs

Home exercise programs are an important part of any physiotherapy service. There’s only so much a physiotherapist can achieve during a home visit. A home exercise program creates a pathway for clients to follow to achieve their goals. Most home exercise programs will encourage clients to complete some form of movement or exercise each day, depending on their general condition and physiotherapy goals.

Guide’s home exercise programs are individually designed for every one of our clients.

The programs are created with the client in their home to ensure safety and to give the person confidence to complete the program unsupervised. With permission, our physiotherapists will take photos of the client completing the exercises and then create a bespoke exercise sheet that outlines the frequency and parameters of the exercise program, including set and repetitions.

As part of the program, our physiotherapists may recommend and assist with the purchasing of basic equipment such as weights, a height adjustable step or a set of pedals.

These pieces of equipment can be purchased through a home care package to avoid cost to the client. Wherever possible, our clinicians will try to develop programs using things they can find within the home. Or design challenges using the lay out of the home, such as doing step-ups on stairs or sit to stands from a chair without arms. Our aim is to provide a cost-effective physiotherapy solution.

Home exercise programs are reviewed and updated each visit, as the client’s functional capacity improves, and they move closer towards their goals.

Home exercise programs can play an important role after a hospital admission, a falls incident, an acute illness or post-surgery. Many operative procedures require physiotherapy to regain full strength, range of joint movement and function. Common conditions we provide exercise programs for post-operatively include total hip and knee replacements, post-fracture, rotator cuff repairs, spinal surgery and general surgical conditions. Being seen by a physiotherapist promptly is associated with good long-term outcomes.
