Group Exercise Programs
Guide Healthcare Physiotherapists can implement a range of group-based exercises based on the needs of your residents. The Department of Health and Ageing’s “Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults” recommends at least 30minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every day. Group exercise programs can provide a safe and supportive environment for older adults to achieve this recommendation.

Exercise programs can assist older adults by:
Increasing muscle size and strength making movement and daily tasks easier
Improving mobility and balance
Increasing bone strength reducing the risk of fractures
Reducing the risk and fear of falls
Improving cardiovascular health reducing the risk of heart attacks and high blood pressure
Improving respiratory health reducing fatigue levels and shortness of breath on exertion
Assisting with weight loss reducing stress on joints and joint-related pain
Improving joint health leading to increased range of movement and decreasing pain
Providing a protective mechanism against disease processes such as diabetes
Improving psychosocial health, including increasing mood and feelings of happiness
Reducing social isolation and creating a sense of community

Guide’s group exercise programs typically focus on improving strength and conditioning of older adults. We achieve this by implementing exercise programs that incorporate:
Whole-body exercises focused on functional movement patterns
Resistance training using basic equipment such as kettlebells, medicine balls, battle ropes, dumbbells and body weight
Dynamic balance training components that include dual-tasking, perturbation, reactionary and mobility exercises
Game-based exercises to create enjoyment and unpredictability

Guide’s group exercise programs are generally delivered as a circuit class, where participants work their way through a range of exercise-based challenges designed to improve strength, balance or mobility.
Pre-screening is completed for all participants before commencing group exercises.
