Seating and Wheelchair Assessments
Just like prescribing an appropriate mobility aid, assessing an older person for the correct seat or wheelchair can play an important role in assisting them to engage in functional activities, improve comfort, manage and prevent pressure injuries and improve the overall quality of life. This is particularly important if someone is spending significant amounts of time in a seated position or if the person’s mobility impairment requires them to complete mobility and activities of daily living from their chair.
Guide Healthcare’s home care occupational therapists will complete a seating assessment which includes:
Discussing the mobility needs of the person
Documenting historical information in relation to the impairment
Consider pressure-relieving needs
Assessing and measuring any existing wheelchair and seating
Reviewing the home and other important environments
Discussing goals and preferences
A seating assessment should identify postural, functional and pressure-relieving goals and then, taking an evidence-based approach, identify how to support the posture to meet the older person’s individual goals. We recommend completing a seating assessment prior to the identification of potential trial equipment. Our occupational therapists will assist in recommending wheelchairs or other seating options, provide education and training on appropriate use and how to ensure optimal positioning.
