Environmental Assessments & Home Modifications

Home modifications can enable older adults to “age in place” or live in the place or home of their choice. Recent surveys have confirmed that this is the preference of most older people in Australia.

Home modifications can be designed to assist people with various health conditions, sensory or movement impairments, or cognitive disorders by supporting the performance of daily activities and improving safety.

The home modification process includes evaluating needs, identifying and implementing solutions, training, and evaluating outcomes that contribute to the home modification. The results of this process may be recommendations for alterations, adjustments, or additions to the home environment and other features that affect the layout and structure of the home.

Guide Healthcare home care occupational therapists may recommend:

  • Installing grab rails in the bathroom or near stairs/steps

  • Designing and installing small threshold ramps

  • Prescribing assistive or adaptive equipment and providing education and training to ensure the correct use

  • Remodelling of kitchens such as lowering bench heights and overhead cupboards, adaptive handles, easy to use tap fittings and wheelchair access under hot plates and preparation areas.

  • Bathroom modifications including the removal of a hob or bathtub to facilitate a level access shower

  • Recommendations and the design of major ramps at primary access points

  • Recommendations for installation of stairlifts

Occupational therapy practitioners provide a valuable perspective to other health professionals, builders and architects, caregivers, and the client during the home modification process.
