The Everest 2025

We are thrilled to mark the successful conclusion of another impactful cross-site event hosted by Guide Healthcare. The primary aim of these events is to create a fun, engaging platform to promote physical activity within the ageing population. Each event leaves us in awe of the remarkable achievements and inspiring stories we witness from residents across the country.

This year, 1,645 residents, from 74 aged care facilities across Australia participated in The Everest, a unique initiative where participants aimed to "summit" Mount Everest within a four-week timeframe. For context, the journey to the summit of Mount Everest from Lukla spans 85 km—an ambitious challenge for anyone. While residents did not physically ascend the mountain, they did navigate challenging conditions, including cyclones, flooding, and extreme weather along Australia's eastern seaboard during the event.

Despite the significant challenge, residents far exceeded expectations. The event culminated in a combined total of 17,920 kilometres walked—yes, an astounding 17,920 kilometres in just four weeks. With the top individual walker covering an impressive 419 kilometres. The level of engagement and enthusiasm has left us at Guide Healthcare truly inspired.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this event has been the profound impact it has had on participants. Beyond the impressive statistics, we have heard countless heartwarming stories from residents who found renewed motivation, connected with their communities, and rediscovered their love for movement. These individual stories—like that of Derek from SCC St Joseph’s Aged Care—are a testament to the transformative power of activity. Derek, who had been unable to walk for the past year, took part in the challenge after it reignited a spark within him. Through weeks of dedicated training, he gradually increased his walking distance from just 5 meters on day one to 30 meters by the end of the competition. Derek’s pride in his progress and his gratitude for the opportunity to regain his mobility exemplify the positive impact of this initiative.

These outcomes underscore the mission of Guide Healthcare. Reading about Derek and others’ journeys was deeply moving, and it reinforces why those of us who work in aged care are so committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of older Australians.

We hope that the 1,600 residents who took part in this year’s event have not only created lasting memories but have also developed new, healthy habits that continue beyond the competition. The physical, social, and emotional benefits of movement, community connection, and goal-setting will have a lasting impact on their lives.

We look forward to sharing more with you on our next event, and we remain committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those in aged care.

Stay tuned for what's next!
