Aged Care Speech Pathology
Supporting residents through the comprehensive assessment and treatment of swallowing and communication difficulties.
Speech pathologists specialise in the assessment and management of disorders of communication and swallowing that may present across the life span. By maximising communication and swallow ability, whether through direct intervention, education or advocacy, a speech pathologist can contribute significantly to the care and quality of life of your residents.
Dysphagia
Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) affects between 40-50% of aged care residents and can lead to undesirable outcomes, including choking, aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition and dehydration. Guide’s Speech Pathologists can provide on-site assessments and give resident specific recommendations to improve wellbeing and safety. Our therapist aims to promote normality by minimising the need for texture modified diets and thickened fluids.
Communication
Communication disorders effect up to 95% of elderly Australians living in residential aged care. As a fundamental aspect of everyday living, our therapist’s can improve a residents ability to communicate which can significantly improve their quality of life. Guide therapists can recommend a range of communication aids and specialised treatments to assist with the challenges associated with neurological conditions (Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia) and normal ageing processes.
Education
Guide healthcare can provide a range of informative sessions for residents, families, care, nursing, kitchen and catering staff. By educating the entire community on the signs of swallowing difficulties, and how to improve communication with residents, we can assist in ensuring resident safety and a better standard of care. Effective education is the key to illness prevention and to empowering residents to stay healthy and happy.
