Group Exercise Programs

Guide’s group exercise programs are tailored to the needs of your residents. We aim to provide a range of offerings within each home to accommodate all residents’ abilities. Group exercise classes are a great way of empowering residents to inspire each other.

At any given site, our physiotherapy programs may include the following group exercise classes:

 Fall Prevention Groups

Incorporating elements of both the OTAGO and SUNBEAM exercise programs, with the latter proven to reduce fall rates by 55% in residential aged care. We have successfully reduced falls rates in our partner homes by up to 48% overall and 78% in dementia-specific areas. The OTAGO and SUNBEAM research achieved success in reducing falls rates through consistent strengthening and balance exercises. As such, this is the focus of our falls prevention groups.

Women’s/Men’s Exercise Groups

Through extensive interviews with residents, it became clear that many of our residents prefer exercising with residents of the same gender. This can be less intimidating for residents, who often have never participated in a structured or gym-based exercise program. Our expert clinicians will adapt each session to focus on key areas such as strength, mobility and balance. Each of our partner homes receives Guide’s ‘equipment back’, including kettlebells, exercise balls, height-adjustable steps, battle-ropes, blaze pods and cycle-ergometers.

Parkinson’s Disease Groups

There is a growing body of clinical research and anecdotal evidence that exercise may have protective effects, including reducing the risk of developing PD and being shown to relieve some of the motor symptoms of PD. Residents with a diagnosis of PD are encouraged to participate in various higher intensity and strength-based programs to assist with symptom management.

Seated Exercise Groups

Whilst our motivation is always to try and keep our residents on their feet, we recognise that this isn’t possible for all residents. As such, generalised seated exercise groups are included as part of all our programs to allow residents with higher care needs to participate in some active range of motion exercises and group-based games. Our aim with these exercises is to maintain active movement, prevent the development of contractures, provide some basic strengthening and have some fun.

Walking Groups

Walking groups are a great way to encourage residents to move more whilst combating social isolation. Many residents require a purpose to participate in exercise. Walking as part of a group can provide this purpose and the necessary motivation to get outside and maintain their mobility.

We encourage and support our staff to provide opportunities for residents to participate in exercise-based initiatives outside of their home. This includes regular visits to local gyms, visiting local gyms and attending hydrotherapy pools.

All of our aged care clinicians are encouraged and supported to implement group exercise programs to suit the needs and desires of individual residents and resident groups within their homes.
