Occupational Therapy for Fall Prevention

Occupational therapists are experts at controlling extrinsic or environmental falls risk factors. An Occupational Therapist’s approach to falls management will typically involve:

  • Assessing a person’s mobility and balance and prescribing appropriate assistive equipment

  • Completion of a comprehensive functional and environmental assessment providing a list of recommendations of how to improve the persons environment

  • Occupational Therapists are experts at analysing, prescribing, planning and managing home and environmental modifications. Recommendations for environmental modifications can include things like rails for stairs, access ramps, widening doorways, chair lifts or bathroom modifications.
